SOUTH AFRICA
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER CENTRE - Located in cape Town, the volunteer centre is a non- government organisation that recruits volunteers in any age group, matching their skills with 150 organisations around South Africa. The centre also trains and orientates volunteers before placing them. South Africa's first Volunteer Centre was originally known as "The Voluntary Aid Bureau." It started in Cape Town in 1979, as a project of International Year of the Child. The office opened in 1980, and at first was staffed entirely by volunteers. In 1983, at a special general meeting, a constitution was ratified and a management committee was elected. The Centre now boasts five full time staff and offers a comprehensive range of services to organisations and individual volunteers. Visit http://www.volcent.co.za/index.htm for more details
